What Is a Rising Sign (Lagna) and Why It Matters Most
The ascendant is the sign that was climbing over the horizon when you were born. In Vedic astrology it is the foundation everything else is measured from.
Your rising sign, called the Lagna in Sanskrit, is the zodiac sign that was rising over the eastern horizon at the exact moment and place you were born. It matters more than any other single point in a Vedic chart because it decides the house structure. Every other placement is read from it. Change the Lagna and the same planets suddenly rule different areas of life, which is why two people born on the same day with different birth times get genuinely different readings.
House one is wherever the rising sign falls. Every other house is counted from it, which is why a two hour error rewrites the whole map.

You need your birth time
Because the Lagna changes roughly every two hours, an hour of error can hand you the wrong rising sign entirely, and with it the wrong house for every planet. If your recorded time is uncertain, a reading can still say useful things from the Moon and the nakshatra, but treat the house-based statements as provisional until the time is confirmed or rectified.

Start simple. Find your Lagna sign, find its ruling planet, and see which house that ruler sits in. Then notice which planets sit in house one itself, since anything there colours the whole outlook. That is already a real reading, and it is more specific than anything a Sun-sign description can offer.
