A good deal still works. Your Moon sign, your nakshatra and the broad shape of your dasha sequence hold up without a precise time. What does need it is the rising sign, and therefore the house placements and the exact dasha dates, since the ascendant changes roughly every two hours. Enter your best estimate to start, then confirm the time from a birth certificate or hospital record, or have it rectified by matching dated events in your life against the periods that would have been running.
Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac, anchored to the seasons. Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, anchored to the actual stars. The two frames have drifted about 24 degrees apart, so most people land one sign earlier in a Vedic chart. The deeper difference is purpose: Western astrology mostly describes temperament, while Vedic astrology is built for timing, with dated planetary periods that say when rather than only what you are like.
