How to Read a North Indian Birth Chart

An interactive walkthrough of the diamond chart — houses, signs, ascendant, and your first real prediction.

ग्रहः भावे राशौ
A planet, in a house, in a sign — the three words that begin every chart reading.
01

The diamond is just twelve rooms

A North Indian chart is a fixed diamond divided into twelve compartments. The top diamond is always House 1 — your Lagna. The houses move counter-clockwise from there. The number you see in each cell is the sign currently sitting in that house; the houses themselves never move.

Hover any house

Each house is a department of life. Hover a cell to see what it governs. Notice that House 1 is always at the top — that anchor never changes.

02

The Ascendant decides which sign sits where

The houses are fixed. The signs rotate. The sign that was rising on the eastern horizon at your birth — your Lagna — gets placed in House 1. Every sign after it follows in zodiac order through Houses 2, 3, 4… and so on. That single anchor decides where every planet in your chart will land.

Example. If your Lagna is Sagittarius, then House 1 holds Sagittarius (sign 9), House 2 holds Capricorn (10), House 3 holds Aquarius (11), and so on around the wheel. A planet sitting in Aries will then be in your 5th house — because Aries is five signs after Sagittarius.

The twelve signs colour the houses

A sign doesn't do anything on its own — it tints whatever planet or house it touches. Think of signs as the temperament; the house is the room and the planet is the actor walking into it.

Your first prediction — combine the three

Every classical reading starts with the same sentence: a planet, in a house, in a sign. Pick one of each below and watch the meaning assemble itself.

Planet

obsession, foreign, ambition, hunger

House

Your body, temperament, vitality, the impression you give.

Sign

fiery, philosophical, adventurous

Reading it together

Rahu in House 1 in Sagittarius

  • Rahu carries obsession, foreign, ambition, hunger.
  • The 1st house — Self & Body — governs your body, temperament, vitality, the impression you give.
  • Sagittarius colours that area as fiery, philosophical, adventurous.

Synthesis. So Rahu in the 1st house in Sagittarius suggests: a fiery expression of obsession playing out in the field of self. Rahu amplifies and unsettles this area — expect self themes to be magnified, hungry, sometimes excessive.

A worked example: Rahu in 1st house Sagittarius

Take it slowly. Rahu is hunger, ambition, the unfamiliar — the part of you that reaches for what your background did not give you. House 1 is the body and the self — how you arrive in a room. Sagittarius is fiery, philosophical, expansive.

Stack them. Rahu sits on the body itself, so the very persona becomes ambitious and unconventional — there is something the person is chasingthrough their own self-presentation. Sagittarius colours that chase as philosophical, cross-cultural, larger-than-life. The native often looks foreign to their own family, drawn to teachers, travel, big ideas; they grow taller with age, sometimes literally; their self-image is built around expansion rather than contentment.

Notice what we did. We never consulted a single rule book. We named what each piece signifies in plain language and combined them. That is the entire first layer of Jyotish prediction — and it works for any planet in any house in any sign. The lab above lets you try it on your own placements.
